U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz stated that the U.S. administration is demanding Iran "completely end" its nuclear program, signaling a hardline stance from the Trump administration.
In an interview with CBS News' "Face the Nation," Waltz emphasized that Iran "must abandon its program in a way the entire world can see," warning of consequences if it fails to comply.
"If Iran had nuclear weapons, the entire Middle East would enter into an arms race," Waltz said, underscoring the administration's concerns about regional stability.
The National Security Advisor indicated that while all options remain on the table, diplomatic opportunities between the U.S. and Iran still exist.
Waltz's comments follow recent overtures from U.S. President Donald Trump, who revealed in a Fox Business Network interview that he had sent a letter to Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, expressing his preference for reaching an agreement on Iran's nuclear program.
"If Iran doesn't negotiate, it will be very ugly for them. Iran cannot possess nuclear weapons. There are other options available," Trump stated.
In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi reiterated that his country would not negotiate with the U.S. under pressure, rebuffing Trump's approach that combined outreach with threats.
