UNESCO bestowed its global prize for media liberty to every Palestinian reporter documenting the conflict in Gaza, where Israel has initiated seven distinct assaults.
Announcing the award on Thursday, Mauricio Weibel, president of the international jury of media professionals, said: “In these days of darkness and despair, we want to send a strong message of solidarity and appreciation to the Palestinian journalists who are covering this crisis in these dramatic circumstances. As humanity, we owe a great debt to their courage and commitment to freedom of expression.”
UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said the award “honors the courage of journalists facing difficult and dangerous circumstances.”
At least 141 media professionals have lost their lives in the Gaza Strip, which has been the focus of Israeli attacks.
