UNSC to hold an extraordinary session on Kosovo's new currency regulation on Thursday, reports Serbian media

Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic confirmed that an extraordinary session of the U.N. Security Council (UNSC) regarding the situation in Kosovo, requested by Serbia, is set for Thursday, Radio-Television of Serbia (RTS) reported.

UNSC is currently chaired by Guyana. It is not yet known whether the session will be open to the public.

Serbia called for the session on Monday, citing tensions sparked by Pristina's decision to abolish the Serbian dinar in payments and trade, a move Belgrade deems illegal and a threat to Serb presence in the region.

What happened?

On Feb. 1, Kosovo's Central Bank (CBK) adopted the euro for cash payment transactions, causing anxiety among the Serbian community reliant on dinars for salaries and pensions from Serbia.

Previously, the European Union and the United States urged Kosovo to postpone the implementation of this decision, expressing concerns over its potential negative effects on Kosovo Serbs.

Washington called on Kosovo to "immediately postpone the implementation of the decision until satisfactory procedures, in line with European standards, are met," and until the population is adequately informed about the transition process, advocating for a more extended transitional period.
