Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to meet with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in New York next week, as part of bilateral talks during the United Nations General Assembly. Erdogan is set to address the international community from the U.N. podium on Tuesday, Sept. 24.
Ahead of this meeting, Mitsotakis met with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides in Athens.
The Greek prime minister emphasized the importance of coordination between Greece and Greek Cyprus, especially amid escalating conflicts in the Middle East. "Coordination between Athens and the Greek Cyprus administration is more essential than ever," Mitsotakis noted.
Christodoulides highlighted that resolving the Greek Cyprus issue and normalizing Turkish-Greek relations would significantly contribute to regional stability. During their talks, the anticipated meeting between Mitsotakis and Erdogan in the U.S. was also discussed.
The Erdogan-Mitsotakis meeting comes at a time when both nations are seeking ways to ease tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean. Their discussions are expected to focus on ongoing disputes and potential pathways for cooperation.
