Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto declared victory in Indonesia's presidential election on Wednesday, citing unofficial tallies and framing it as a triumph for all Indonesians.
Despite lacking an official declaration from electoral authorities and with his opponents yet to concede, Subianto has maintained a significant lead in early, unofficial counts in the three-way race to govern the world's third-largest democracy.
According to initial "quick count" tallies conducted by Indonesian polling agencies, Subianto secured between 57% and 59% of the votes, with over 80% of polling station results accounted for in the samples.
The 72-year-old candidate's association with Indonesia's authoritarian past, having served as a special forces commander during a period marked by allegations of torture and disappearances, remains contentious, although Subianto denies any wrongdoing.
Subianto presented himself as a successor to the popular incumbent President Joko Widodo. Subianto also has selected Widodo's son as his vice-presidential running mate, indicating a strategic move to align himself with Widodo's popularity and possibly garner support from Widodo's supporters.
