Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday called for making the upcoming period the “Century of the Turkic World,” emphasizing unity among Turkic nations and a stronger stance on international issues, including the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Erdogan spoke at the 11th Summit of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), joined by leaders from across Central Asia.
In his address, Erdogan criticized the international community’s response to the situation in Gaza, which he described as a “genocide.” He urged the Turkic world to adopt a “decisive stance” regarding the situation, underscoring Türkiye’s opposition to what he called an “inhuman massacre” in the region.
Erdogan highlighted recent developments in Karabakh, expressing hope that Azerbaijan’s recent territorial gains would be reinforced through a formal peace agreement. Following Azerbaijan’s reestablishment of sovereignty over Karabakh in September 2023, Erdogan noted the importance of diplomatic steps to consolidate peace with Armenia.
At the summit, Erdogan proposed increased collaboration on energy and transportation projects, advocating for a “Turkish Investment Fund” to support these goals.
He also discussed a consensus on a 34-letter common alphabet among Turkic countries, encouraging other Turkic nations to adopt it for greater regional integration.
Addressing the ongoing war in Ukraine, Erdogan reaffirmed Türkiye’s support for a negotiated peace, highlighting Türkiye’s role in facilitating dialogue between the warring parties.
