Türkiye is positioning itself to play a significant role in Syria's reconstruction as economic sanctions ease and opportunities emerge in trade, investment, and infrastructure, according to a report by CNBC-e.
During a meeting chaired by Trade Minister Omer Bolat, representatives from 16 organizations, including TUSIAD, TOBB and MUSIAD, gathered to discuss Türkiye's potential contributions to rebuilding Syria after years of civil war.
The meeting emphasized the severe damage to Syria's infrastructure and the humanitarian challenges faced by its people. Officials highlighted the importance of fostering a spirit of brotherhood and humanitarian assistance while focusing on trade, investment and reconstruction efforts.
Participants identified housing, water and electricity infrastructure, and transportation as the most urgent priorities. The collapse of physical infrastructure, labor shortages and governance issues were underscored as challenges to be addressed.
Turkish contracting and engineering firms are expected to play a critical role in meeting these needs.
The meeting highlighted several sectors that could benefit from the reconstruction process:
Minister Bolat emphasized that "the easing of sanctions could create significant trade opportunities, with Turkish companies well-positioned to take a leading role."
Rebuilding Syria will require substantial international financial backing, officials noted. Multinational partnerships and aid will be crucial to fund large-scale infrastructure projects and address the humanitarian needs of displaced populations.
Aleppo and Damascus will be central to the reconstruction effort.
Plans include integrating Damascus into regional trade routes through organized development and a strategic approach to rebuilding Aleppo as a major economic hub.
Türkiye is also addressing Syria’s agricultural needs. A report from the Ministry of Agriculture will guide efforts to support both plant and animal production.
Additionally, the rehabilitation of Damascus and Aleppo airports is being prioritized, with initial efforts focused on restoring Damascus Airport operations.
