Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al Sudani in Baghdad on Saturday to discuss border security and strategies to combat drug trafficking, according to the prime minister’s office.

Momeni discussed with Mohammed Shia Al Sudani ways to strengthen bilateral relations and issues of mutual concern, such as border security, in accordance with the agreements signed between the two countries.

According to the statement, the two leaders explored ways to combat drug trafficking and coordinate the mechanisms along the borders to enhance security and stability in the region.

They also discussed procedures for facilitating Iranian pilgrims' visits to Iraqi holy shrines during the annual Arbaeen pilgrimage.

They also confirmed a memorandum of understanding signed by Momeni and his Iraqi counterpart, which allows mutual recognition of driving licenses.

The Iranian minister arrived in the Iraqi capital early Saturday.

Meanwhile, Iran and Iraq signed 14 bilateral cooperation agreements on September 11, 2024 during Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s visit to Iraq, his first foreign trip since taking office.
