The first full moon of spring, known as the "pink moon," will reach its peak on April 12, 2025. Occurring just before apogee on April 13, 2025, at 6:49 p.m. EDT (22:49 GMT), this full moon will be a micromoon, appearing smaller and dimmer due to its distance from Earth.
Despite its name, the moon won't actually appear pink. The term "pink moon" is derived from the pink creeping phlox wildflowers, which bloom in early spring.
These flowers, known for their hot pink color, are abundant in the eastern and central United States around the time of the April full moon, according to The Old Farmer's Almanac.
Viewing conditions in the U.S. will vary. Clear skies are expected in the South, Southeast, and parts of the West, while cloud cover may obstruct the view in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.
In 2025, the Pink Moon will also be visible in Türkiye. For the best experience, it is recommended to find a clear, dark location with minimal light pollution and to look toward the horizon.
NASA explains that the moon's glowing appearance results from sunlight reflecting off its surface, giving it its usual white or golden hue. The "pink" designation, however, celebrates the seasonal bloom of wildflowers, particularly creeping phlox, which carpet the landscape during early spring.
This full moon also holds religious significance in Christianity. The first full moon following the spring equinox, known as the Paschal moon, determines the date for Easter.
