As spring breathes new life into the landscapes of eastern Türkiye, Akdamar Island—set in the azure waters of Lake Van—prepares to host the third Almond Blossom Festival, promising visitors a visual feast of blooming trees, cultural events, and natural beauty.

Each year, the almond trees on the island erupt in delicate pink and white blossoms, transforming Akdamar into a seasonal paradise. Coupled with the snow-draped peaks of Mount Artos in the background and the crystal-blue lake that surrounds it, the island becomes a magnet for photographers, nature lovers, and culture seekers.

A jewel in Lake Van's crown

Located just a 20-minute boat ride from the Gevas district, Akdamar Island is already one of the most visited destinations in the region thanks to its stunning nature, historic church, and panoramic views. During the festival, the island offers an even more mesmerizing experience.

This year's event, scheduled to begin Sunday, will run for two days and is organized in collaboration with the Governorship, Van Metropolitan Municipality, Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, Eastern Anatolia Development Agency, Van Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Van Yuzuncu Yil University.

2 days of culture, sport and nature

Festivalgoers can expect an exciting array of activities, including canoe and sailing demonstrations on Lake Van, concerts, folk dance performances, traditional cuisine showcases, and poetry readings. One of the highlights is a large-scale photo safari, where hundreds of photographers will capture the island's unique beauty and its centuries-old Armenian church.

Visitors will travel by boat from the pier in Gevas, and while the Ministry of Culture and Tourism has subsidized entrance fees to the island, guests will need to cover the cost of the boat ride.

Abdurrahman Sahin, the provincial director of culture and tourism, emphasized the island’s importance as a cultural and touristic landmark.

Akdamar Island is one of the most visited places in the region. With its history, architecture, and natural wonders, it deserves to be seen by the world. Through this festival, we aim not only to highlight the almond blossoms but also to boost the island's brand value,” Sahin said.

He added that all preparations have been finalized, and the goal is to promote the island in the best possible way.

Visitors captivated by spring magic

Havva Bulut, a visitor from Rize, shared her impressions, "I had been planning to see Akdamar Island for a long time. The blooming season has brought an incredible vibrancy. I came five years ago during winter, but this spring visit has been beyond words—it's like a slice of heaven.”

Photographer Turan Keve echoed the sentiment, “When the almond trees bloom, Akdamar turns into a completely different place. More festivals should be organized to promote the island, which sees an influx of visitors every year. Each season reveals a new face of its beauty.”

Aysegul Ozbek, another visitor, added, “We captured some stunning images of Akdamar, which is one of Van’s most beautiful spots. The blooming almond trees create a magical setting. Everyone should come and witness this extraordinary view.”
